Joshua Knights, aged 18, was racing a Ford Sierra that rammed into a car with a young family inside. Five people were killed in the accident and Mr Knights appeal to have his sentence reduced has been rejected. Knights was jailed for six and a half years in May. Paul Mann QC, for Knights, said he was far behind the driver of the Sierra when the tragic smash happened.
But Mr Justice Sweeney said "All the
participants in a race must share equal responsibility if the leading
vehicle manages to accelerate ahead and causes one or more deaths." However his driving ban was reduced from ten to six years.
Tragically the crash killed
Joshua Taylor, seven, and his brother, Leon, four, who were travelling
in a Renault Megane driven by their mother. Parmjit Tut, of Woodthorpe Road, Shuttlewood, and her nephew, Luke Taylor, 13, suffered serious injuries. Kenneth
Jones, 25, who was driving the Sierra, and the passengers, his brother
Martin, 22, and friend Andrew Darnell, 21, were all killed. |
