Recession hits the Peak District

Posted on Friday, 21 November 2008 04:02PM by Editor
The Buxton Advertiser is reporting how how the recession and credit crunch are hitting people in the area hard. They go on to say how local employer Otter Controls begins talks with employees over job losses and changes to working patterns, thanks to a drop in demand from the car industry.

The advertiser continues "Approximately 25% of Otter products are made for automotive applications, all of which are produced in Buxton. Vauxhall are working only two weeks in the month, Land Rover have instituted a four-day week and Mercedes are only producing vehicles three days a week."

"As a consequence, the company have started a consultation process with the staff involved to consider possible actions, to reduce capacity to match demand. These actions include changes to working patterns, shift arrangements, etc."
