For the 19th time since beginning in 1989 Operation Christmas Child is up and running again with the aim to bring Christmas cheer to unfortunate children around the globe. Focusing on deprived children in Eastern Europe and Africa, the charity is asking for residents of the Dales to help contribute to their now infamous shoe boxes to help make Christmas a better time for these children.
Looking back on the successes of previous years, regional manager Jane Simmons is hoping to continue with the same, if not more, level of dedication from local residents and the schools, community organisations,
churches, businesses and individuals throughout Derbyshire took part
last year. She is hoping to smash the 35000 shoeboxes last year so that even more children can benefit fromthis worthwhile appeal.
All donations are distributed to children who live in orphanages,
street shelters, rehabilitation centres and hospitals as well as the
children affected by the Chernobyl
disaster.
It doesn't take much effort or money to put together a shoe box, something which many people will worry about. Simple items such as stationary a small ball,
knitted hat, toy car, hair clips, a toothbrush, football cards, a
colouring book or a even hairbrush would bring delight to these children.
To donate visit www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk or call 0870 011 2002.
Shoeboxes can be left at Yeomans Outdoors in Matlock and Bakewell and at Crich Tea Rooms. |
