Six firefighters
from the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have raised thousands of
pounds by climbing the highest mountain peak in North America. The
team scaled Mount McKinley in Alaska and were able to raise a massive
£17,300 for the Firefighters Charity. The team met with bad weather
conditions at 15,000 feet and never made it to the summit.
Firefighter
Andy Topham, expedition co-ordinator, said "We were so disappointed
when we were unable to reach the summit – other people continued and
one died and one lost both hands and feet, it wasn't worth the risk. We're
really pleased, though, with the amount of money raised and our thanks
go out to all local businesses that contributed, as well as members of
the community. We're hoping to do it all again in 2010, we're not going
to let Deadly Denali defeat us." |
