Festival of angels brings town together

Posted on Tuesday, 06 December 2011 12:05PM by Judy and the Peak District Online Team
HARK! The herald angels are shining in a town’s festival uniting the community.

Dozens of winged messenger models are filling Bakewell’s All Saints Parish Church.

Shops and homes are also proudly displaying the spiritual beings in the first Festival of Angels.

Rev Canon Tony Kaunhoven said: "We wanted to bring the church and the community together to share something.

"Angels are part of the Christmas story, symbols of the messengers of God and people have a belief in them."

The idea started as Yorkshire artist Celia Kilner’s exhibition of 60 angels from different eras, traditions, countries and religions went on show across the church’s walls.

Community groups, schools, residents and businesses have now crafted their own depictions to complement the display or sit in their own windows.

Church warden Jeff Marsh and wife Sue made their own.

Sue said: "We’re hoping the church will get even more visits now. It’s exciting because it just shows people want to join in and do it."
