This cottage is located on the very western edge of the Peak District in Hayfield

A charming, easily accessible, 19th century, local stone built holiday cottage in Hayfield village, on the western edge of the Peak District National Park.

Cracken cottage is an ideal base for walks around Kinder Scout. The Snake Path starts less than 100 yards away, which is one of the best routes to Kinder Scout. 15 minutes walk further along Kinder Road and you reach the start of the famous mass trespass in the 1930's.

Accommodation


1 double bedroom, 1 single bedroom with bunk beds. Additionally, 1 double sofa-bed is available in the living room. The cottage also features a fully fitted bathroom, well equipped kitchen/barbecue area.

As you embrace this warm Victorian terraced holiday home, you enter the family room which has pine skirtings and hand made floor to ceiling shelving units. The family room also has a colour television, gas fireplace and a selection of books and games. The lounge also doubles as a bedroom which sleeps two on a comfortable sofa-bed

The fully tiled kitchen has pine units and a gas stove and oven. In the kitchen the back door leads to a barbecue area, which is reached by stone steps.

Upstairs there is a spacious double bedroom with fitted pine wardrobes and a solid pine floor. The room enjoys magnificent views to Cracken Edge.

    Location

    This holiday home is an excellent base for the enthusiastic walker or cyclist, young or old. Less than 100 yards to the rear of the dwelling there is the Snake Path winds its way past Twenty Trees and then onto Kinder Reservoir to the foot of the highest mountain in the area. Kinder Scout which provides panoramic views across the North West. There are superb walks across the nearby Kinder Plateau, Combs Moss and Cracken Edge, which provide terrain for happy hikers of all abilities.

    For the bird watchers among us there is many opportunities to hear and see the comical Red Grouse on the platuex and surrounding moorland as well as being able to hear the great Curlew. For the more persistant birdwatcher the rare Red Kite can often be spotted.

    On the local canals the shy Kingfisher and large herons can be spotted. There is also a chance to do what we all love and feed the ducks.

    For the keen cyclist, there is the Sett Valley Nature Trail which boasts cycle hire, an information centre and several miles of track. The trail works its way through the valley, alongside the imposing Lantern Pike towards the old industrial town of New Mills, which is home to the Millennium walkway and visitor centre.

    The Roman spa towns of Buxton and Matlock boast fine architecture and great shopping opportunities, whether you're looking for antiques, boutiques or local crafts. The spa towns are easily accessible, as are the attractions of Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Lyme Park. Nearby is the traditional farming town of Bakewell, home to the Bakewell tart and many shops selling local produce, The well known cave village of Castleton and the plague village of Eyam are within easy reach of this wonderful Victorian cottage.

    The beautiful hamlet of Buxworth, which is designated a protected ancient monument and which remains unique, as the only complete example of a canal and tramway terminus in Britain, is within easy reach.From the nearby settlements of Chinley, Glossop, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley Bridge there are good rail links to the cities of Manchester and Sheffield with all their cultural, sporting, retail and leisure facilities. Transport to and from local stations can be arranged.

    Hayfield village has several country pubs, many quality restaurants, a local village shop and a fish and chip shop. There are also many popular eating places in the surrounding villages to cater for all tastes, from Indian to Italian.

    Hayfield provides a perfect base for any outdoor enthusiast, with many great circular walks and a cycle trail, there is so much to do.

    Annually in Hayfield there are the Sheepdog Trails which take place in September and the May Queen festival.

    One of the Peak District's most beautiful and endearing traditions is that of well dressing, which takes place in around twenty Derbyshire villages over the summer months. Local villages such as Buxworth, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley Bridge as well as the more famous villages of Tissington and Youlgreave, all have themed wells each year.

    The Peak District is also great for family attractions, including the UK's number one theme park, Alton Towers.
