Belper is a small town in Derbyshire’s Amber Valley and set on the edge of the Peak District, making it a good base from which to explore this beautiful area in one of the Peak District Holiday Cottages.
In Medieval times Belper was noted for nail-making and then in the 19th century it became one of the first Mill Towns. Belper’s most famous son is the industrialist Jedediah Strutt who was a partner of Richard Arkwright and built a water-powered cotton mill of his own, the second in the world, at Belper. he coming of the North Midland Railway in 1840 brought further prosperity and, in 1820 Belper was the first place in the UK to get gas lighting. Much of this industrial heritage is evident in Belper with its cobbled streets and old mill buildings, two of which are Derwent Valley Heritage sites and provide a fascinating glimpse of the town’s past. Nowadays Belper is famous for its chocolate as Thorntons has its factory here.
